Vigo Library plans yearlong book group, Reading River Writers

TERRE HAUTE — As a part of 2013 Year of the River, the Vigo County Public Library is organizing a book discussion group, Reading River Writers, from February to November with titles selected loosely around rivers.

The group’s first book for discussion is “River Horse,” by Least Heat-Moon, on Feb. 6. Participants do not need to sign up but must have read the book and prepared for a discussion at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month at Java Haute, 3805 Wabash Ave. Development librarian Suzanne VanReed will facilitate the discussions. Multiple copies of the books are available at the library’s Community Services Department. Most of the selections are also available as audio books.

The books selected include non-fiction, mystery and suspense, young peoples, western, biography and humor. The March selection will be the Vigo County Public Library’s Big Read book, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” by Mark Twain. The March 6 selection is Twain’s “Tom Sawyer,” and for April 3, “The River Why,” by David James Duncan. May 1 follows with “The Bears of Blue River,” by Charles Major, considered to be an Indiana classic.

On June 5, participants will discuss “Peace Like a River,” by Leif Enger and on the second Wednesday, July 10, the discussion will center on “The River,” by Gary Paulsen. “North River” by Pete Hamill is the selection for Aug. 7.

The Reading River Writers list is available at the Vigo County Public Library and on www.vigo.lib.in.us/community/bookclubs.
