The work of an award-winning, young artist is featured by Prairie Arts Council in its January exhibit in the Lilian Fendig Gallery of the Carnegie Center at 301 N. Van Rensselaer St., in Rensselaer.
Indiana State University graduate Corey Crum’s “Once Living Things: Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures” is a collection that explores the usually unseen parts of organic forms. Crum grew up on a farm where he came in close contact with both animal and plant life and now seeks to combine that experience with a love for luscious paint.
Originally from Frankfort, and now a resident of Rensselaer, Crum is an instructor in drawing and painting at St. Joseph’s College in Jasper County. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State and a master’s from Northern Illinois University. He has also served as a visiting artist at ISU.
His awards include 2nd place Best of Show in the 2011 Dick Blick Juried Art Show at DeKalb’s Jack Olson Gallery, the 2009 Krieg A. Gibbons Memorial Award for Sculpture at the ISU Art Gallery, and, in 2006, the President’s Purchase Award as well as the Best Upperclassman Award in the ISU Student Juried Show at the ISU gallery. He has exhibited his work in Chicago, Cincinnati and Edinboro, Penn., in addition to DeKalb and Terre Haute.
“My family owned a hog farm outside of Frankfort, and there I became familiar with all stages of animal life,” Crum said. “Although people shy away from decay and death of once living things, those stages are part of the process of nature. My sense of that part of the process is reflected in these paintings and sculptures.” Crum’s work also reflects on the decay of plant life as well.
The Prairie Arts Council mounts 11 exhibits each year, all of which are organized by exhibits chairwoman Judy Kanne. “Our exhibitions include the work of area artists, artists with a connection to the area, and professional artists from across the state,” Kanne said.
The “Once Living Things” exhibit runs through Feb. 1. Gallery hours are 2 to 4 p.m. CST Monday through Friday, and other times by appointment. A reception for Crum will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. CST on Jan. 18.
