Dicky James and the Blues Flames will head to Memphis

TERRE HAUTE — For the second year, Dicky James and the Blues Flames will be heading to Memphis, Tenn., as the Indiana representative for the International Blues Challenge.

The Indiana event took place on Oct. 14 at the Slippery Noodle Inn in Indianapolis. Four bands and two duos competed.

“It was a great evening for the blues and all those who got to hear and see so many talented musicians at this year’s Indiana Blues Challenge held at the world famous Slippery Noodle Inn in Indianapolis,” said Mark Novak, event organizer and master of ceremonies. “The city of Terre Haute was well represented by two professional bands, bar none: Dicky James & the Blue Flames and The Ken Tucker Band.”

Novak noted to the crowd before the awards announcement how strong the competition truly was.

“We could take the tour bus to Memphis with any of these groups tonight and be very impressive,” he said.

Winning for the second year was a surprise, albeit a pleasant one, for Blue Flames drummer Will Cox

“We were thrilled and honored to win over some great competition including an excellent performance by the Ken Tucker Band,” Cox said. “Now we’re looking forward to a fun week in Memphis.”

Ken Tucker was happy with his band’s performance in spite of the third-place finish.

“I’m extremely proud of JD and Jimbo for their phenomenal performance Sunday night,” Tucker said. “They are the best rhythm section a guitar player could ever hope for.”

Tucker also extended his praise of Dicky James and company. “I want to congratulate our brothers in blues — Dicky James and the Blue Flames — for winning the Indiana Blues challenge,” Tucker said. “I want to thank the Slippery Noodle and Hal and Carol Yagey, and Mark Novak for the wonderful event. It was an honor to be there.”

The International Blues Challenge will take place Jan. 29 through Feb. 2 in Memphis. Performances are judged on five categories: blues content, vocals, talent, originality and stage presence. These categories are weighed. The judges in Memphis are professional blues musicians.
