TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State Museum is offering a variety of exhibits to begin the new year.
Ice Age the Overnight, Jan. 19 and 20, 7 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.; $30 per member/$40 non-member (registration required).
Join Ice Age friends for a night of fun and adventure. Explore the museum’s labs and help find remains from thousands of years ago. Take a flashlight tour of the prehistoric collections. Discover how mammoth skeletons fit together. Find out if you would have what it takes to be an Ice Age hunter going after a mastodon. Cap your experience with a breakfast fit for a giant ground sloth.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day Programming (Free Public Day), Jan. 21
Bring a canned food item and receive free admission to the Indiana State Museum as it celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Films, live music, poetry and performance art will fill the galleries and public spaces of the museum as the life and times of this great man are explored.
Nikon Small World, through Feb. 17
The Nikon Small World contest winners in this exhibit show the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light of a microscope.
Amazing Maize: The Science, History and Culture of Corn, through March 24
It takes 25 corn plants per person per day to support the American way of life. This 10,000-year global genetic journey explores the relationship between people and corn, arguably the most productive domesticated plant and the greatest plant-breeding achievement of all time. Visitors will be a-maized at the scientific, economic and cultural significance and impact of corn on daily life, past and present.
Steele Concealed, through April 22
The Indiana State Museum is displaying the newly discovered and currently untitled painting next to the one it was under for 86 years after the death of Indiana artist T.C. Steele (1847-1926).
Eternal James Dean, through June 2
Eternally young, sexy and intense, that’s the image of James Dean. But who was James Dean the man? Born in Marion, Dean made just three films before his death in 1955 at age 24. Eternal James Dean will take a look at his Indiana roots, his brief time as an actor in California and New York, his films and his passion for motorcycles and racing.
Guided Docent Tours, through June; Monday through Sunday; tours are booked during museum hours and included with museum admission. Ten or more visitors are needed to participate.
The tours are geared toward audiences who want to know more about some of the wonders Indiana has to offer. They are conducted by registration only and must be booked at least two weeks in advance. The Lincolns: Five Generations of an American Family, Feb. 9-Aug. 4
The legend of Abraham Lincoln reflects the fascinating reality of his life through the sum of human accomplishments and failures as well as the family bonds that impacted how these events unfold. Explore the lives of Abraham Lincoln’s kin from his mother and father’s struggle in early 19th century Kentucky through the death of his last direct descendent. Artifacts from the museum’s Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection will form the core of this exhibition, but priceless objects on loan from several of America’s leading historical institutions will provide context for this rich and compelling family story.

Celebrate the 16th president’s 204th birthday with the man himself. Meet Abraham Lincoln; enjoy fun activities related to his life and times and revel in the popular tunes of the 1860s. This celebration coordinates with the opening of the exhibition The Lincolns: Five Generations of an American Family.
Sankofa Black Heritage Festival, Feb. 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; free.
This one-day annual event will take place during Black History Month and celebrate the history and heritage of people of African descent. The day will include an educational component focused on Akan culture, live music and dance cultural performances, games, arts and craft activities, cultural exhibits and black history films.
10th Annual Indiana Art Fair, Feb. 15 and 16
A smorgasbord of pottery, jewelry and artwork to suit every taste will kick off the art fair season at the museum’s 10th Annual Indiana Art Fair. Browse among pieces in a variety of media, each available for purchase. This juried show is a great place to see art by more than 70 Indiana artists.
