Action Track to play host to 4 USAC events

TERRE HAUTE — U.S. Auto Club officials have released preliminary schedules for next season and four events are listed to be run at The Action Track.

The Tony Hulman Classic for sprint cars is set for May 24 with an Indiana Sprint Week event slated for July 18 and a third sprint car race for Sept. 1.

The Sumar Classic for Silver Crown cars is back on the schedule and is the final event on the schedule, slated for Oct. 13.

No midget races are scheduled for Terre Haute. The Hut 100 that began in Terre Haute again will be run at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt.

Sprint and midget races also are set for Lincoln Park Speedway and Bloomington Speedway.

Champions for the 2011 season were honored last week by USAC.

Bryan Clauson won the national drivers championship and repeated as midget champ, while Levi Jones took sprint-car and Silver Crown honors.

Jones now has won a record five sprint car titles and has won two Silver Crown championships.

• Pair honored — Two persons with connections to Crossroads Dragway were honored at a An HHRA Division 3 banquet this month.

Derick Troxell, a student at Indiana State, was named Division 3 ET Bracket driver of the year.

Pam Lobb received her 12th award from National Dragster Magazine for her reporting of activities at Crossroads Dragway with news items and photographs.

She was cited for the accuracy of her reports in promotion of drag racing.

Drivers named — Two new drivers have been named for two IndyCar Series teams.

Frenchman Simon Pagenaud will be in the Sam Schmidt Motorsports Honda car. He formerly drove in the Champ Car Series.

The 27-year-old driver finished second in the 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Le Mans 24 events last year.

Sam Schmidt Motorsports also has hired Oliver Webb, 20, to compete in the Firestone Indy Lights races. He competed in Europe this year.

Josef Newgarden, the 2011 Firestone Indy Lights champ, will be in the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing car in what is now a partial schedule but may be a full one if sponsorship is obtained.

Newgarden, Dario Franchitti and Will Power have been named to the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters All-American team.

Franchitti won his third consecutive IndyCar Series championship and Power was second this year.
