Metro Rounup: USAC schedule for 2010 about ready to roll

By Tom Reck

TERRE HAUTE — U.S. Auto Club schedules are pretty well set for 2010 and several events are scheduled for The Action Track in Terre Haute, Bloomington Speedway and Lincoln Park Speedway at Putnamville.

One traditional race back on The Action Track schedule is The Sumar Classic for Silver Crown cars. It will be a night race July 21.

This event is named in honor of the race team headed by Don Smith and Chapman Root.

The Hoosier Hundred for Silver Crown cars at the Indiana State Fairgrounds also is on the schedule again after not being run last year. It will be one of the events leading up to the Indianapolis 500 on May 28.

The Hulman Classic for sprint cars will be the first USAC race in Terre Haute next year. It is another pre-500 race, set for May 27.

Other sprint car races in Terre Haute will be one of the Indiana Sprint Week events on July 14 and a late-season race on Sept. 11, one night after racing at Lincoln Park Speedway.

One traditional race not back on the schedule is The Hut Hundred for midget cars. Midget races are slated at Lincoln Park and Bloomington Speedway as part of Indiana Midget Week.

Indiana Midget Week begins June 16 at Gas City I-69 Speedway followed by races at Lincoln Park on June 17, Bloomington Speedway on June 18 and Lawrenceburg Speedway on June 19, with the series closer set for June 20 at Kokomo Speedway,

Indiana Sprint Week begins July 9 at Lawrenceburg and continues July 10 at Gas City, July 11 at Kokomo, July 14 at The Action Track, July 15 at Brownstown Speedway, July 16 at Bloomington and July 17 at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt.

Brownstown is a new addition to the schedule.

Bryan Clauson edged Brad Kuhn by eight points to win the Indiana Midget Week title this year while Levi Jones topped Clauson by two points to take honors in Indiana Sprint Week.

First USAC races are set for February with Silver Crown, midget and sprint events in Arizona.

• Pit stops — IZOD IndyCar series driver Ryan Briscoe and ESPN correspondent Nicole Manske were wed in Hawaii earlier in the month.

• Kraig Kinser will return to driving for Steve Kinser Racing in the winged sprint cars after being with Tony Stewart Racing while Steve Kinser's car will carry Stewart Racing colors.
