Helio Castroneves is beginning to look like the Ironman of Indy.
Castroneves’ crew helped earn him the Pit Stop Challenge victory Friday during Carb Day Festivities at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Castroneves’ 8.001 beat Hideki Mutoh’s 9.54 in the final round to take his fifth such title and a record 12th for Team Penske.
“They did an incredible job. All week long their work paid off today,” said Castroneves “We kind of shuffled people from the 6 and 12 car. We can get this job done. I know I can count on these guys.“
In a race that relies heavily on strategy, pits can make or break a race.
Even though Friday’s competition pits drivers against one another, it is really a showcase for pit crews. Crews share in the $50,000 prize money.
In pursuit of this trifecta, Castroneves may feel a sense of déjà vu. Last year, he swept the pole, the pit stop challenge and race.
Wild slicing and dicing was the tone for the day during the Firestone Freedom 100 for the Indy Lights Series. New Zealander Wade Cunningham won his third trophy and second consecutive at IMS, holding off Charlie Kimball on the final lap.
Cunningham, who had not been a car all season, jumped at the opportunity to drive for Sam Schmidt Motorsports at Indianapolis this year. “Not being in a car, it’s tough to keep focused at a big race like this, and I’m not race fit at the moment. It’s tough tough.”
Cunningham and Kimball battle head to head, lap after lap each taking and relinquishing the lead. “It’s the best oval car I’ve ever raced, and I knew that with his [Cunningham’s] experience, his being a one-time thing, he didn’t have anything to lose, but everything to gain.”
Pippa Mann, the first woman to ever earn a pole at Indianapolis found made an early exit. She and Jeff Simmons made contact on the second lap ending both drivers‘ day.
For one hour, IZOD IndyCar Series drivers had to opportunity for a final shake down of their cars. All 33 drivers took laps in preparation for Sunday. Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon turned in the top speeds for the day with a 225.574 and 225.159, respectively. Rookie Mario Romancini made the most turns around the speedway with 54 laps.

Carpenter arrives as Indy 500 threat
And the crowd went wild.
Not only did Ed Carpenter win the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, he is the hometown son. Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series. There is no questioning his credentials now. -

The native of Marshall, Ill., earned the No. 1 spot for the May 26 race with a strong run in the Fast Nine competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. He is the first American driver on the pole since 2006. -
