USAC cars return to Action Track today

TERRE HAUTE — The United States Auto Club sprint cars return to the Terre Haute Action Track tonight for the Jim Hurtubise Classic presented by First Financial Bank.

Levi Jones and Chris Windom — both winners at the Action Track in past races, Jones a seven-time and Windom the champion of the Tony Hulman Classic in July — are fighting for the USAC sprint car championship.

Thursday’s USAC sprint race at Lucas Oil Speedway in Clermont was canceled due to inclement weather, so Jones (1,085 points) still enjoys a 19-point edge over Windom (1,066) in the points standings.

Also in range is Jon Stanbrough with 1,047 points. Stanbrough won the most recent sprint car event at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo. in August.

One of the hottest sprint car drivers on the circuit has been Tracy Hines. He won two of the last three races, both at Dodge City, Kan.

Gates open at 4 p.m and practice begins at 6 p.m. According to USAC, there will be four heats, a 12-lap semi-feature and a 30-lap feature with 22 starters. The winner of the race gets $5,000.

As of press time, there was no word from USAC as to the status of the Sumar Classic, which was postponed on July 3.
