Swope celebrates student art April 7 to May 12

Exhibit showcases work of students grades K-12

TERRE HAUTE — The Swope Art Museum’s “45th Annual Student Art Exhibition,” made possible by Old National Bank, runs from April 7 to May 12. The public reception will be from 1 to 3 p.m. April 14 with the high school award presentation at 2 p.m.

The student exhibition is a favorite tradition, showcasing the work of students from kindergarten through high school. Begun in 1967, under the leadership of Swope director Howard E. Wooden in cooperation with the Vigo County School system, the exhibition has since grown to include surrounding counties at the high school level.

As the Swope celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2012, it emphasizes that this exhibition is a rare opportunity for students to see their work alongside the great American artists represented in the Museum’s collection.

Hundreds of students from 33 elementary, middle and high schools are represented in the exhibition. Elementary and middle school teachers select what will be shown, while the high school section was judged by Lance Crow, education director at the Richmond Art Museum. The Richmond Art Museum has a unique distinction of being the only independent art museum housed within a public school.

“Judging artwork can be a difficult assignment. Any forum in which artists put work forward for evaluation offers opportunities for valuable returns. … Juxtaposing the creative ideas of different minds in one place is a powerful gesture speaking to what humans can accomplish, what beauty and expression we can create, when we come together,” Crow said.

Crow selected 61 works of art from 177 high school submissions. Of those, he chose 17 to receive awards (listed below and on the Swope website.)

While the exhibition is on view, all of the fifth graders in Vigo County will participated in tours led by a corps of volunteer docents.
