Valley Art Guild honors photographer in July

TERRE HAUTE — Jeanette Ellingsworth, Wabash Valley Art Guild’s artist of the month, stresses the importance of her camera as the constant companion that always accompanies her and helps her capture life as it expresses itself.

She emphasizes that she likes to draw attention to “what God has created.” An illustrative example of her work might be a solitary flower growing out of the crack of a rock on the side of a mountain — one of the many images that fill her with awe in those rare “Aha!” moments known to mankind only.

Ellingsworth has lived a full life, raising three children (two girls and a boy) and overcoming obstacles along the way. Her obstacles included the deaths of several relatives, including her mother and husband within a few months of each other, and her lifelong struggle with dyslexia. Forever the optimist, she is thankful that her burdens made her strong. Ellingsworth explains that her artistic expression and creativity have always been a part of who she is. What she wanted or needed at various stages of life was the mother of her creations.

For example, when she wanted to create an environment in her garage, Jeanette painted stones on the floor and a Gulf of Mexico backdrop. She started her photography because she wanted each of her grandchildren to have a picture book memento that illuminated the exciting and revealing moments of their lives.

Ellingsworth’s hobbies include growing flowers, being a creative and enterprising cook, sewing and quilting. Her best-selling works are the personality-capturing pictures she takes of people’s pets.

Through her Mary Kay business of 27 years, she has met many interesting people and has seen much scenic beauty that forms the foundation of what she weaves into her art.

Ellingsworth will have two of her pieces on exhibit at the Vigo County Public Library this month. Her work “Magnificent Rainbows-eight” adorns the cover of the publication Applied Optics (September).

Her pictures of rainbows were taken at Swan Lake at the border of British Columbia and the Yukon. It was one of those “Aha!” moments that she captured with her companion camera. Her shock in seeing eight rainbows at once prompted her to contact Raymond Lee, the author of the book Rainbow Bridges. Lee is also adjunct professor of mathematics and science at the U.S. Naval Academy Division. He chose to use Ellingsworth’s photo on the cover of the magazine.

At Green Valley Mine Lake, as she was taking her grandchildren fishing, Ellingsworth had another “Aha!” moment when a beautiful butterfly alighted on a plant and she captured her up-close picture “Butterfly on Plant.” Ellingsworth explains that she will always enjoy painting life with her camera because it is her passion. She currently has 129,000 pictures transferred from camera to computer.

Wabash Valley Art Guild’s meetings are on the second Thursday of each month, usually at the Vigo County Public Library. For information about the July meeting and about the WVAG, call Eloise Weymouth at (812) 466-7754.
