RCAA member presents ‘Waterfalls’ at Vigo Library

TERRE HAUTE — February brings a stunning exhibit of waterfalls by photographer Spencer Young to the Vigo County Public Library in Terre Haute.

Young, a native of La Grange, Ill., holds a bachelor’s degree in astronomy from Northwestern University and a master’s of science from Iowa State University. For several years during and after attending schools, he worked as assistant photographer and darkroom operator for a portrait and wedding studio. He then worked several years as a geologist for small coal mining companies in Indiana and Illinois.

For the past few years and up to the present, Young is a self-employed geologist.

Young seemed to have kept the photography spark and he considers himself an amateur landscape photographer hoping to emulate his artistic hero, Ansel Adams. However, photographing solar eclipses is very high on his list of priorities, having visited numerous foreign lands, including Singapore, Bali, Java, Thailand, Hong Kong, Canton, Turkey, the Greek Islands and Tahiti.

River City Art Association meets the second Tuesday of the month either in The Landing at Fort Harrison or Heinl’s flower shop, both in Terre Haute. RCAA has an art exhibit at The Landing with new art rotated every other month.

Also visit The Golden Frame at 509 E. Voorhees for etched glass and photography designed by RCAA member Todd Stokes.

Upcoming RCAA events include a show in March in Community Theatre of Terre Haute and the annual Spring Exhibition in April at The Landing with an opening reception at 6 p.m. April 20.

An art expo also is planned for April 21 with times to be announced later.

In June, visit Java Haute to view more art by RCAA members. Later in the year, artists will display work at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

For more information on RCAA events and membership visit http://rcaa.info or call (812) 878-1252 or (812) 235-5759.
