BOOKS: Rockville Library partners with Vigo for Big Read

Rockville Public Library and Rockville Correctional Facility’s vocational program (offered by Ivy Tech) are partnering with the Vigo County Public Library for The Big Read.

The Big Read is a national program initiated by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. The program encourages literary reading by asking communities to come together to read and discuss a single book. “Fahrenheit 451,” by Ray Bradbury, is the book featured this year.

“Fahrenheit 451” is a fiction work of an imaginary place in the future. The novel presents an American society where reading is outlawed and firemen start fires to burn books. Written in the early years of the Cold War, the novel is a critique of what Bradbury saw as issues in American society of the era. Some may think of this as censorship, but Bradbury has said it is a story about how television destroys interest in reading literature.

An informal book discussion, to be lead by Kathleen Rush, will be conducted at Rockville Public Library at 6:30 p.m. March 13. This is a free program sponsored by First Financial Bank. The public is invited to attend. Free books are available at the library on a first-come basis.
