Amid the glamour, excitement and gentle chords of Dan Lampton’s guitar refrains, the Wabash Valley Art Guild proudly opened its 33rd Annual Spring Art Show at the awards reception on May 7 at the Honey Creek Mall.
The exhibit continued on May 8 and 9. Featured were more than 120 artworks from across the Wabash Valley, bringing a tremendously wide collection of visuals for the community to admire, the artists to scrutinize, and the judge to ponder
The categories included: Paintings (acrylics, oils, watercolor); Photography (tradition, digital); Drawings/Mixed Media; and Three-Dimensional/Other.
In addition to the traditional pieces of paintings and photographs were a number of unique artworks including fused glass, intarsia and carved wooden boxes to round out the exhibition.
The opening reception in May brought much anticipation and applause as this year’s winners were announced.
This year’s juror, Julie Rooney of the Low Road Gallery in Greencastle, remarked that it wasn’t an easy job with so many skillfully produced pieces to select from. Nevertheless, she made her selections, complete with explanations to justify her decisions.
As each award winner came forth, Rooney told what particular characteristics engaged her attention and followed it with her insightful reasoning to support her choice.
The Wabash Valley Art Guild was founded in 1980 by Florence and Norman Ratliff and was organized to bring together those in the community interested in the creation and appreciation of art.
Monthly meetings are usually conducted on the second Thursday of the month. In addition to the Spring Show, the WVAG hosts other exhibitions, demonstrations, and activities.
