TERRE HAUTE — The Turman Art Gallery at Indiana State University will present “Subterfuge,” a contemporary printmaking exhibition featuring works of art by Matt DiClemente, Stephanie Standish, Brian Stuparyk and Mike Swagerle.
The public is invited to attend the opening reception from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 18. In addition, the four artists will be speaking about their work at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 at the gallery.
Printmaking has a long, rich history in the techniques of relief, intaglio, lithography and screen printing.
Until the emergence of the Internet, printed media has been the easiest and most effective method of disseminating information to the mass public.
Historically, the most basic definition of a “print” is an image created on a matrix and then produced as an edition of multiples using traditional techniques.
More recently, contemporary printmakers have explored this definition and have included non-traditional mediums, such as stencils and blueprints under the printmaking umbrella.
The artists of “Subterfuge” utilize both traditional and non-traditional forms of printmaking in the creation of their work. “Subterfuge” not only includes satirical work that comments on social values, political ideals and consumer culture, but comments on the nature and history of printmaking itself.
DiClemente earned his bachelor’s degree in printmaking from West Virginia University in 2005 and his master’s in print media from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2008. He currently lives and works in York Beach, Maine.
Standish obtained her bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in printmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005 and her master’s in print media from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2007. She currently works as the collections manager for the Swope Art Museum.
Stuparyk received his bachelor’s in photography studies from Ryerson University in 2003 and master’s in print media from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2007. He is currently a visiting professor at Drury University in Springfield, Mo.
Swagerle received a bachelor’s in printmaking from Indiana State University and is the owner/operator of “Swag’s T’s” custom screen printing in Terre Haute.
The Turman Art Gallery is on the ISU campus in the Fine Arts Building on Chestnut St., just west of Seventh Street. “Subterfuge” runs through March 12.
