Shawnee Theatre gets melodramatic with ‘The Curse of Doom Mine’ production

Fourth play of season opens Thursday

TERRE HAUTE — Think slappy, cockamamie, wacky, zany, crazy and just plain silly, double it, then triple it, add a dash of ridiculousness, and you’ll be close to describing the Shawnee Theatre’s fourth production, “The Curse of Doom Mine.”

Fun for the whole family, this hilarious comedy is a truly unique Shawnee Theatre experience.

The melodrama mixes all the fun of a Mel Brooks movie with all the cheesy jokes your uncle may have told, an incredibly fun experience where the audience becomes part of the show as they boo the villain, cheer on the hero and beautiful heroine, and get to throw tomatoes at the actors. (We mean plush tomatoes – don’t bring your own!)

Warm up your arm for villainous banker Chase Morgan, as he attempts to steal the great bounty hidden inside Doom Mine.

“The Curse of Doom Mine” is sure to warm up your throwing arm and tickle your funny bone all in one night of hilarity and mayhem.

Be sure to bring the whole family, no one will want to miss this night of melodramatic fun!

Indiana’s oldest professional summer theatre will open the fourth production of the 51st season at 8 p.m. July 8.

 The production will run through July 18. Written by Adam Pockross and Matt Graber and filled with music, laughter and lots of puns, the melodrama returns to the Shawnee stage. Shawnee favorite Kevin Lee Guthridge returns to emcee and direct “The Curse of Doom Mine.”

With the combined talents of Tabitha Burton (The Exterminator), Jon Becraft (Chase Morgan), Josh Carroll (Fu Gold), Brandon Cox (Hector the Prospector), Jake Miller (The Monster), Lisa Ermel (Merrill), Martha Stai (Lenore) and Harry Watermeier (Siegfried) and a few of their friends from the summer company, prospectors, miners, heroes and heroines make this Shawnee tradition a wonderful treat for parents and kids alike.

Performances at Shawnee continue each Thursday through Saturday throughout the summer. Tickets are $14 for adults or $7 for children. Buy a six-show flex pass for only $65.

 Ticket office hours are  9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with a break for lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and one hour prior to each performance.

“The Man Who Came to Dinner” by George S Kaufman and Moss Hart, July 29-Aug. 1 — One of the most popular plays of the past century, “The Man Who Came to Dinner” is a zany, frenetic comedy by theatre’s most famous playwriting team. Outlandish radio wit Sheridan Whiteside is invited to dinner at the home of Ernest W. Stanley, but before he can enter the house, he slips on ice and injures his hip, forcing him to be bedridden in the home for weeks.  Weeks turn into months as the radio host begins to take over the Stanleys’ home, their staff and starts to meddle in the lives of all who surround him. Featuring a cast of wonderful characters, 10 actors will portray 36 hilarious roles.
