River City to feature artist Don Turner in January

River City Art Association and the Vigo County Public Library will feature art by Don Turner for the month of January in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

Turner taught art for 35 years with the Vigo County School Corp. and was chairman of the art department at Terre Haute North Vigo High School.

Turner taught African-American art history at Indiana State University for 19 years in the evenings while teaching in the public schools during the day.

Many of his high school students have gone on to major in art in college and to careers in art.

Prior to his teaching career, Turner was a professional fashion illustrator for the former Meis store in downtown Terre Haute.

Since retiring from his teaching career, Turner works as an artist at his own graphic arts firm, “Turner Graphique Designs,” which specializes in illustrations.

Turner holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art education from ISU.

He studied gifted and talented art at Indiana University and attended John Herron Art School in Indianapolis. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Teaching.

Turner has won numerous awards and commissions for his painting, drawings and ceramics.

His pieces are included in museums and private collections throughout the United States.

Turner joined “River City Art Association Inc.” in 2009 and is the current president. He also is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, a board member of the Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute, and a member of the Vigo County retired Teacher’s Association.
