One of Clabber Girl’s own showcases photography at museum

Denise Turner, a graphic designer at Clabber Girl Museum Gallery, will showcase her photography through Jan. 31 in the museum gallery at Ninth Street and Wabash Avenue. Clabber Girl will host an opening reception from 5 to 6 p.m. today.

Turner’s exhibit includes prints she shot at the site of her great-grandparents farmhouse, a property that has remained in her family since 1862 when the Homestead Act was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln.

The exhibition also includes images Turner captured two weeks after May tornadoes struck Joplin, Mo.

“I have experienced so many scenes through travelling that have compelled me to record those images,” Turner said. “Photography is an outlet for creative expression and communication. It is capturing the nature and emotion of the subject that makes it meaningful.”

After graduating from Terre Haute South Vigo High School, where she majored in art, Turner received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Indiana State University.

She landed a job as a graphic designer and has been working in the industry ever since. Her work has received numerous design awards from Addy’s, Graphic Design USA, Neenah Paper, Strathmore, and Premier Print: Best Poster-Worldwide, and has been published in PRINT magazine.

The reception is free and open to the community. Prints will be available for purchase throughout the exhibit.
