TERRE HAUTE — Just as Mary Lincoln kept cameo portraits of her departed family members, so too the public wanted to hold on to images of their final scenes. Stereoscopic views, newly popular during Abraham Lincoln’s time in office, gave a 3-D view of such remorseful scenes as the presidential box at Ford’s Theatre where he fell — this one expensively hand-colored — and the first place he was buried in Springfield, Ill., where he lay with son Willie while the formal tomb was constructed, guards of a small private association keeping the vigil. But Mary Lincoln avoided these final scenes — she could not bring herself to visit the cemetery until 8 months after Lincoln’s death, and she never again went to a theater.

Scott Hinton’s photos take focus at Vigo Library
River City Art Association and the Vigo County Public Library are featuring photography by Scott Hinton throughout May in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.
Hinton is a self-taught photographer and artist whose main focus is nature-inspired pictures and paintings. -
