ISU to host 2009 International Ceramics Symposium during July

Indiana State University will host seven world-renowned ceramic artists in conjunction with the 2009 International Ceramics Symposium, titled “Cultural Influence: From Traditional Expression to Modern Context.”

The symposium, a collaboration between Indiana State’s Department of Art, University Art Gallery and the College of Arts and Sciences, will feature Gabriela Luptkov, Slovakia; Jung-do Lee, Korea; Yuji Yasui, Japan; Deirdre McLoughlin, Ireland/Netherlands; Lenka Holkov, Czech Republic; Jana Trubackov, Czech Republic and Yih-Wen Kuo, USA/Taiwan.

While in residency during the month of July, the artists will create, lecture, and exhibit work created during their visit. All events are free, open to the public and accessible to persons with disabilities.

July 3

Keynote Address: Dick Hay, titled “Casserole, Baked Beans, and the Guernica”

Lecture: Yih-Wen Kuo, Taiwan 6 to 9 p.m., Recital Hall, Center for Performing and Fine Arts

July 17

Lectures: Yuji Yasui, Japan and Lenka Holkov, Czech Republic 6 to 9 p.m., Recital Hall, Center for Performing and Fine Arts

July 24

Lectures: Janet Trubackov, Czech Republic and Gabriela Luptkov, Slovakia 6 to 9 p.m., Recital Hall, Center for Performing and Fine Arts

July 25

Lectures: Jung-do Lee, Korea and Deirdre McLoughlin, Ireland/Netherlands 2 to 4 p.m., Recital Hall, Center for Performing and Fine Arts

July 30

Opening Reception: 30 Days of Dirt: Clay International 4 to 7 p.m., Turman Art Gallery, Fine Arts Building, 649 Chestnut St.

Open studios

The symposium will also host open studios from 5 to 7 p.m. on July 17 and 24 and a public workshop with demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 25 in the Art Annex, located at 537 N. Fourth St. Please enter from the southwest side of the building.

The public is encouraged to get a glimpse into the life of these professional ceramic artists. Refreshments will be provided.
