Winners named in Sisters of Providence Youth Art Contest

TERRE HAUTE — Young artists were honored during the Sisters of Providence Youth Art Contest reception March 4, in Providence Center at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Approximately 85 people attended the reception in O’Shaughnessy Dining Room. This was the fourth year of the contest, which attracted 36 entries from the Wabash Valley. This year’s theme was “Saint Mother Theodore Guerin – Indiana Pioneer.”

All youths ages 5-18 who reside in Vigo, Parke, Vermillion, Clay and Sullivan counties in Indiana and Clark, Edgar and Crawford counties in Illinois were eligible to enter. Each artist who entered the contest received a Certificate of Participation and ribbon.

Those who placed were:

Ages 5-7

First place: Celine Mitchell, Terre Haute, home-schooled

Second place: Savannah Jane McCoy, Dennison, Ill., St. Patrick School (Terre Haute)

Third place: Celine Park, Terre Haute, St. Patrick School

Honorable mention: Claire Pfister, Terre Haute, Seton Home School

Ages 8-10

First place: Zachary Klug, Terre Haute, DeVaney Elementary School

Second place: Kate Grabowski, Terre Haute, St. Patrick School   

Third place: Yzabel D. Tio, Terre Haute, Woodrow Wilson Middle School

Honorable mention: Eric Pfister, Terre Haute, Seton Home School

Ages 11-13

First place: Gabriella Renteria, Terre Haute, St. Patrick School

Second place: Alexis Klug, Terre Haute, DeVaney Elementary School

Third place: Gabby Comelleri, Terre Haute, Woodrow Wilson Middle School

Honorable mention: Judson Long, Carbon, Rosedale Elementary School

Ages 14-18

First place: Jon Drobny, Terre Haute, Terre Haute North Vigo High School

Second place: Kayla Pepelea, Clinton, South Vermillion High School

Third place: Courtney Pfister, Terre Haute, Seton Home School

Honorable mention: Kendra Carlson, Clay City, Clay City Junior/Senior High School

First- through third-place winners in four age categories received cash prizes, certificates and ribbons. Those selected for honorable mention were presented with certificates and ribbons. Cash awards were provided by Terre Haute Savings Bank, courtesy of Bart Colwell, bank CEO and president. Cash awards of $75 each were given to first-place winners in the four age divisions. Each second-place winner received $50, while each third-place winner was awarded $25. Sister Marsha Speth, general officer, presented the cash awards on behalf of the bank.

Art Criss, vice president for enrollment management at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, presented $1,000 first-year tuition awards to each first-place winner in the four age divisions. Youths may use those first-year tuition awards if they attend St. Mary-of-the-Woods College as freshmen and are students in either the traditional college program or the Woods External Degree program.

Terre Haute Children’s Museum Executive Director Lynn Hughes provided each of the 16 art contest winners with admission tickets to the museum.

Sister Paula Damiano, general officer, presented certificates to the 16 winners, while Sister Jane Marie Osterholt, general officer, presented ribbons to the 16 winners. Sister Ann Casper, executive director of the Office of Congregational Advancement, served as emcee.

The winners’ artwork will be displayed in the Heritage Museum in Providence Center through March 26. Museum hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
