INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana’s Medicaid actuary is telling lawmakers that growth in the state’s rolls in the coming years will be driven by uninsured children seeking health care.
Milliman Inc.’s Rob Damler told members of the Indiana House Ways and Means Committee that more residents will likely seek Medicaid coverage as they are told by hospital workers and other providers they need insurance.
Milliman has estimated lawmakers will have to find an additional $600 million over the next seven years to cover the costs of low-income Hoosiers who are forced into Medicaid by the health care law’s individual mandate.
The firm estimates that about 90,000 Indiana residents already qualify for Medicaid but have never enrolled. The actuarial firm predicts the individual mandate will push them to enroll.
