10 Things to Know for Tuesday

Your daily look at late-breaking news, upcoming events and the stories that will be talked about today (all times EDT):

1. FAMILIES PLAN FINAL GOODBYES

After getting their first glimpse of the man police say killed 12 people in a Colorado movie theater, families of the victims return home to begin burying their loved ones.

2. WHY SANCTIONS WILL BE FELT BEYOND PENN STATE’S CAMPUS

Stiff NCAA sanctions mean Penn State will take at least a $60 million hit. But the temporary evisceration of the university’s football program means less money, too, for the leafy college town nicknamed “Happy Valley” and the surrounding community.

3. DO AS WE SAY, NOT AS WE DO

France’s National Assembly is set to pass a law on sexual harassment — a week after male legislators in the chamber greeted a Cabinet minister wearing a blue-and-white flowered dress with suggestive hoots and catcalls.

4. HE’S LEAVING, ON A JET PLANE

The GOP’s Mitt Romney departs on his first foreign trip as a presidential candidate. His itinerary includes Great Britain, Israel and Poland.

5. SHRINK THAT DRINK, MAYOR URGES

Friends and foes of New York City’s proposed ban on large sugary drinks will have their say at a public hearing at 1 p.m.

6. LAWMAN GETS CHANCE TO DEFEND HIMSELF

With his immigration patrols, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a hero to some, a rogue to others. He’s expected to testify at a racial profiling trial starting at 11:30 a.m.

7. FIRST US WOMAN IN SPACE DIES AT 61

Space used to be a man’s world. Then came Sally Ride.

8. ‘AMERICAN IDOL’ FINDS A NEW JUDGE

Pop singer Mariah Carey inks a one-year deal to join the show next season. She’ll be paid $18 million, an AP source says.

9. US vs. SPAIN MUCH MORE THAN A TUNEUP

The U.S. men’s basketball squad squares off against Spain — the team it beat four years ago to win Olympic gold — today at 4:30 p.m. It’s just an exhibition, but nobody would be surprised if the world’s top two teams meet again for the title in London.

10. SEATTLE IS HOME NO MORE FOR ICHIRO

Outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, a 10-time All-Star, was traded from Seattle to the Yankees. No need for him to travel, though. Since New York was playing the Mariners Tuesday, all Suzuki needed to do was walk from the home to the visitors clubhouse.
