TERRE HAUTE —
I wasn’t at all surprised to watch Linton pick up a 20-point win over previously unbeaten North Knox in high school football last Friday, one week after the Miners had lost by 40 to North Daviess.
Their losing by 40 was one of the reasons I wasn’t surprised, actually. Another was the fact that I hadn’t been all that impressed by North Knox’s early success.
Well, I came away with my confidence in Linton football tradition still intact, but also with a lot more respect for the Warriors than I had before. They run an unorthodox offense, they hit, and they have a very good offensive tackle named Chance Kelley who has the most unusual build I’ve seen on a player this year (HUGE shoulder pads, skinny legs; it’s a weird look).
Which leads me to the conclusion that Class A Sectional 40, which the Miners have won three years in a row, is definitely up for grabs. I know Linton would like another crack at North Daviess, but North Knox can’t be counted out and Perry Central, which has won three straight games after a 1-3 start, is also lurking.
That doesn’t make Sectional 40 any different than most of the Wabash Valley sectionals, however, with the draw just a few days away.
Take Class 5A Sectional 6, for instance (please, Henny Youngman would have said). All Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South have to look forward to in a couple of weeks are choices among the state’s most improved team, Brownsburg; the only team to beat Brownsburg, Avon; the state’s most underrated team, Pike; and traditional powers Ben Davis and Zionsville. The team all the schools from the power conferences might want to draw is Indianapolis Tech, from the Indianapolis Public League.
The Titans are unbeaten.
Northview’s future in Class 4A Sectional 16, I’m sure George Gettle will be happy to tell you, involves Evansville Reitz (state champion two of the past three years) and third-ranked Jasper.
West Vigo’s success this season could set the Vikings up for some kind of tournament run, but Class 3A Sectional 21 does still include Indianapolis Chatard, a state champion more than half the time since 1997. The Trojans are 3-4 right now, but one loss was a forfeit and the other three were to two other parochial powers (Roncalli and Cathedral) and nationally respected Cincinnati Elder. Oh, and the other private school in Sectional 21, Brebeuf, is unbeaten.
Our Western Indiana Conference teams really know how to pick their sectionals, in fact. Sullivan, to win Class 2A Sectional 32, would have to escape Evansville Mater Dei, not to mention teams like Forest Park, North Posey, South Spencer and Southridge, and South Vermillion, in Sectional 30, has a field that includes 2009 state runner-up Monrovia and Greg Barrett’s unbeaten juggernaut from North Putnam.
• Volleyball news — Count me the least surprised volleyball fan in the Wabash Valley to hear that Taylor Hayne and Madison Steward have both broken the career kills record at Terre Haute South that was formerly held by Katelyn Bishop.
If there had been a way they could have broken it at exactly the same time, it probably would have happened.
I’m at a loss to recall any other teammates I’ve seen who have played together for four years and are virtually identical in height, jumping ability and statistical production. It’s a nice problem for the Braves to have, though.
Thanks to all of you who supported the “Volleyball for the Small” fund-raiser a couple of weeks ago when South played at Terre Haute North, by the way, or those of you who participated in the “Volley for the Cure” event at Riverton Parke earlier this week.
Another opportunity to raise money for a good cause is tonight, when South Putnam hosts Greencastle in the Eagles’ “Attack for the Cure” match.
