AMEY TAKES AIM: Look for me in the yellow shirt

TERRE HAUTE — I won’t be wearing pink or blue tonight for the Terre Haute South-Terre Haute North volleyball match at North, but I’m anticipating that plenty of you will be.

With different colors being offered for the second annual “Volleyball for the Small” match, it’s going to be a little easier to spot which team has more fans, and coach Madison Minnick of the Braves said last week that South’s aim was to pack the gym with pink. So I’ve given you all additional incentive to make last-minute T-shirt purchases ($12 from any player or from either school, money going to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Union Hospital).

I may have erred in calling it the Newborn ICU in recent articles, by the way, but the two words that begin with “n” have essentially the same meaning. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it.

You probably also noticed that first place in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference is on the line, after both Braves and Patriots beat both Indianapolis North Central and Center Grove on Saturday.

Additional incentive is probably not necessary for this particular match, however.

As for my attire? Two former North volleyball players, Michelle Weiland and Dee Allen, figured me out several years ago (were they on the last North team to beat South?) and got to the point where they could predict my shirt color — blue if South played West Vigo, green or gold or brown if North played South, maybe red or black for a North-West Vigo match.

•  Things we’ve (maybe) learned from football so far — A couple of closer-than-expected wins for Northview have no doubt given West Vigo’s Vikings hope as they look toward Oct. 8. Coach Jeff Cobb is hoping they don’t overlook Edgewood and Owen Valley in the meantime.

There are a lot of bad teams in the National Football League again, and a surprising number of them are in the vaunted NFC East. I know the Giants only play the Colts once every four years, but that’s not a very good excuse for that game plan on Sunday night (and I’m talking about the offensive game plan more than the defensive one).

The MIC is not bad again this year, but the Braves and Patriots are getting the heavy stuff out of the way early and still could challenge for fifth place (I’d have said fourth if North-Ben Davis was at North).

It’s a good thing those Indy-area schools have football, though. After last weekend’s volleyball and girls soccer results, is it time for North and South to seek a tougher league?

That was tongue-in-cheek for you literalists in the crowd.

Way to go Digger — The Indiana Baseball Coaches Association recently awarded Jerry “Digger” Phelps of West Terre Haute the honor of District Umpire of the Year.

The 2010 season was his 19th as an umpire.
