ISU ensembles honor memory of 9/11

Concert offers an opportunity for reflection, hope

TERRE HAUTE — Vocal and instrumental music blended with visual images as Indiana State University student performers joined Sunday in songs of reflection and hope in memory of 9/11.

The ISU School of Music hosted a student ensemble inside Tilson Auditorium, a tribute concert titled “Reflection and Hope” before an audience of about 350.

The concert choir, symphony orchestra and wind orchestra combined, accompanied by a simultaneous slide-show of images from the 10th anniversary of terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Roby George, conductor of the wind orchestra, wore his tuxedo through the halls as performers prepared to take their spots.

“We’re very excited about doing this,” he said, noting the crowd was strong. The three-part ensemble gives the department a chance to show off all its students, he added. “We started as soon as school got back,” he said about the planning, adding that the concept for a 9/11 tribute concert was discussed earlier in the spring.

Selections performed included “Kyrie,” “Nearer My God to Thee,” Henryk Gorecki’s “Symphony No. 3 Opus 6,” and “America the Beautiful.”

Sophomore music and business major Tanner Thurman was among those attending, explaining a number of his classmates participate.

Thurman was in the fourth grade that Tuesday morning of Sept. 11, 2001, he recalled.

“I remember watching it on the television in class actually,” he said outside Tilson Auditorium.

Lori Shew said she comes to many ISU musical performances.

“My daughter is in the orchestra,” she said while standing in line for a ticket. Her daughter, Katie, plays violin in the symphony orchestra, and Lori said she was excited to hear the wind orchestra and concert choir. “It’s always good.”

The auditorium darkened as choir members took the stage to open with “The Star Bangled Banner” before the multimedia slide show began, merging their voices with images and song.
